Hi, today I've been to a publishing company and they have offered to publish five of my books that I have written. They are drawing up a contract for me now...but I need some advice. Do you suggest I have a solicitor view the contract?? also they have told me the % of what i'll get for every book that I sell?? does anyone know the standard % of a book that is £6 each??

Hi,

The publishing company are doing it for free....all i am doing is getting the books illustrated, they will print the books and market them, put them on amazon etc etc. I have self published two childrens books already and have marketed them myself and got them in local shops around my area....i have three other books written but financially i can't afford the printing costs etc so to enable me to push them to a wider audience i am going through the publishing company. Once i have agreed to the contract.

I would loved to have done everything myself for all of my books but i just cant afford it...i had an illustrator do the work for free as she was a friend for the first two books and my graphic designer did it for free as she was my neighbour but i can ask for more help as I've got three more books that could potentiall sell well.

Hi Victoria...I add my congratulations. Most of us aspiring writers long for a response such as yours. Must be such a satisfying experience. You don't say if you are paying the publisher or if he is doing it for free.

As a novice myself and frustrated by rejection for free publication, I researched Amazon recently and found it so easy to publish on their site. And the process is free.

I mention this because if you are looking at contracts you might want to check if your publisher is including this facility to buyers.

Advantages - E-books are increasing in sales; no changes to book required by Amazon.; you get 70% of sale price at end of each month; largest publisher in the world; you can promote book at zero cost for a couple of days to gain publicity and reviews.

Obviously there are a few negatives, like preparation of cover and layout etc. but these can be done at low cost with free software online. Overall, there seems to be a sense of freedom in the process. However, others on this site may have had some bad experiences, which I'm sure I will prompt.

Hope this helps. Wishing you success.
