hey guys,
I previously asked a question but had no response so I thought I'd try it again. I was wondering if it would be okay to use someone in real life for the story I'm working on. The individual I would like to use is the current Emperor of Japan, but I'm too scared to start this story in case I cannot use him for my work. He is not the main focus of my novel however the imperial family is. I would really appreciate your advice on this?
Hi David. If you feel you MUST use the real name and the position of the person/people, you can write to their public relations officer for permission. Usually they will ask you to send them your work and all you are going to say, have them say and do. If they think it will in no way harm them they may, only may give you permission. I asked the estate of Professor Christian Barnard for their permission, even though I didn't need it as he's dead. They asked me to send the relevant work, I did, then they just left me without and answer, but as I am making him the good guy I'm using his real name anyway, because I checked with other authorities first, but the living you WILL need permission.
Hope it turns out as you want David, regards Paul G
Thanks everyone for your helpful comments! I am going to start the story tonight and worry about it once I have it all down on paper.
Hi David,
I would suggest you start your story just the way you imagined from the very start, once reaching an end, you should gather opinions/ recommendations from professionals. You can always change the name in the end if this is necessary, but do not let these such of things bother you in the very beginning, do not loose the focus on the story. Good luck.
Best Regards
Sylwia
