Prologues - are they needed?

On my recent research I found that publishers aren't too fond of the opening prologue or preface. Personally, I love them. So I would like to know what you think: are they needed for a novel, or are they a waste of time and too predictable?

Replies

I admit it - I skip prologues.

I love epilogues though.

I prefer epilogues.

The 'front matter' was really interesting - definitely clears up the difference between a prologue and preface, not to mention what each page means before a novel starts. That really helps, thank you!
