If one has the resources available, would self publishing not be the best way to usher one's literary work of art through the threshold of success?

Hiya, sorry I haven't got back to answer your question sooner.
Regarding plagiarism:
Realistically, you don't need to worry about your unpublished novel being plagiarised - it is incredibly rare. Even the shadier natured "agents" and "publishers" out there are unlikely to steal your work; it's far easier to make their money charging people reading fees and the like as the money is instant and there's no legal risk.
The thing to remember about self-publishing is that you get all the profits - if any - from your work but you also have to do all the publicity and selling and managing the distribution of it.
You also have to bear any losses. From what I hear a lot of self-published writers end up with a massive pile of unsold books and no profit at all. Don't let me put you off, but think if you have the time, the expertise and the contacts to sell your book once it is published.

Sorry about the duplication of my comment. I don't know how to delete the extra post or even if this is possible!
My apologies
