You've done nothing wrong, it's just a quirk with this site and one of the reasons we love it. If you delete the old post completely before posting the new one, the comments should be deleted along with it. Editing the old post and replacing it with the new text retains the old comments.
If you have deleted it and the comments are still there, you might send a message to Admin indicating which messages to delete, they would be happy to oblige.
