Short Stories

Just curious. What length would you describe a short story? I've just seen the Short Story 2014 competition for W&A and the word limit is 2000 words.

Im currently working on a short story, but im already at 1500 words and not close to finishing, so I was just curious as to what lengths different types of stories would be?

Its possible this question has been asked before so sorry for asking again!!

I am told that in competitions, stick to their required length. That's THEIR definition of a short story for THAT particular competition.
