short stories?

Hi, I'm currently writing some short ghost stories for an anthology, and wondered how long and how short they should be. I envisaged a book for commuters. I'd welcome your experience, and feelings on this please.

Anthologies and competitions usually give word counts so unless you're writing for a specific one, write the story until you feel it's finished. After it's finished, you can start trimming it down if necessary.

The Fiction Desk run a ghost story competition every year. The deadline is usually January. The winners and runners-up get published in their anthology. You might be interested in entering one of your stories in that one.
