Do you think a good short story can be developed into a novel or are the two incompatible?
Does anyone know of any successful authors who have done this?

I agree with Susan.
An idea for a short story could be expanded into a novel. Many authors have used short story ideas and turned them into a novel or novella. It's amazing how your original ideas multiply as your story evolves.
Similarly, a novel may become and trilogy, or even a longer series of novels. Malorie Blackman intended to write a trilogy when she started writing 'Noughts and Crosses'. To date, 'Double Cross', is the fourth book in a brilliant series.
Good luck.
To me that's an odd question because why wouldn't a short story make a good novel? As with anything it's a case of fleshing it all out.
