Should I try to publish only in India, my native country? or Should I attempt to publish in UK/USA that is my preference?

Hi,

I live in India. My Novel is a literary work and set in India and China.. I have titled the book 'An Other Tale of Two Cities'; the two cities being Chennai in India and Shanghai in China. The book also is about two youngsters living in India with a zeal and talent setting their sights on winning the Gold medal at the Shanghai Games, beating the Chinese At their Game.

Should I have the book published only in India or would the book could be published in US/UK, where I would like to publish..

Regards,

Ravi Krish

Ravi, there's nothing to stop you doing both. If you found an agent in India, it's possible that they could also find a UK or US publisher who would be interested; it's all about sales and making money. Similarly if you found an agent in the UK, I'd have thought it would be in all your interests for them to try to sell it in India. You would have to make sure the English was perfect for international markets. Books about sporting endeavours could do well in an Olympic year - 2016, of course - but you'd have to hurry to meet that deadline.

You could certainly try to have it published anywhere you like, but - as others have pointed out on this forum - SOME agents aren't willing to represent overseas writers, as they want their clients to be available for one-t-one talks as well as for publicity purposes (chapter readings and book signings).

Remember that an agent earns 15% of the author's royalties. So that the more that your book sells, the more the agent earns. Unless you can help to "push" your book, the agent isn't going to earn as much.

Check out individual agents' conditions (some DO handle overseas authors) on their web-sites. See The Writers' And Artists' Yearbook, available on this site, or (possibly) at your library, for contact information, as well as useful information on what each agent is interested in.
