TO SHOW OR TELL

Hello

Please I am a young Nigerian Writer who has a dream to become a good Novelist. Please I need to understand the term 'show and tell' in writing. Does show means the conversation between characters. I seem not to understand this and i wanna do. A reader of my manuscript on authonomy.com told me recently that she likes to read books where the actions kick off instantly.

Showing is writing actions that show how your characters are feeling or behaving. Telling is simply writing how they feel.

A simple example:

Telling: Mary is happy today.

Showing: Mary skipped down the road smiling broadly and calling a cheerful hello to everyone she passed.

The reader will know by her actions that she is happy, you don't need to tell them.
