Sorrow and Sadness in your novel

Hi Everyone. I would like to know how would you describe in your novel the loss of a loved one. Someone your character loved more than anything else in the world. How far would you describe your character's sorrow to bring any reader to tears. If anyone has a snippet of this subject on shared works - I would like to read or if you know of a book bound to bring you to tears...

I've written a world war two short story about my grandfather who was killed at Dunkirk. It's had a couple of comments from people that it's sad and brings tears to their eyes.

With regards to the saddest thing I've ever read I guess Issac Beshevis Singer's short story The Seance is a contender.

Thanks Mark and Beatrice. Did you ever write a heartbreaking piece like that? What's the saddest novel or short story you ever read?

Thanks Bea, and you are so right - sorrow can be such a personal thing. As a child I was reprimanded by my older brother for not crying when our pet dog was put to sleep due to an illness, but what he didn't know was that I had locked myself in a toilet and quietly cried my eyes out! I just couldn't do that in front of others.
