A Story spawned from a classic

Hi there,

I recently read an Edgar Allan Poe short story and I've been inspired to write another in my own words which has the same structure and plot but adapted around different characters and a different situation. Is this alright?

I think I may be confusing the plot and structure. I'll give an example of what I mean:

Edgar Allan Poe's story is about young lovers who become separated by death and the man vows to never love again, but does.

I want to follow the same structure but a different story e.g. Two children fall in love but are separated by one moving away, the girl vows to never love again, but does when she is older with a woman.

You can see the similarities.

Hm,

I'm not sure it is. If you simply change names and locations but keep the plot and structure then effectively it is still Edgar Allan Poe's story, no?

If the characters find themselves reacting differently to the circumstances and if their reactions change the plot in a substantial enough fashion, then .... perhaps.
