Synopsis

by Michelle Yeboah

I have been asked to put forward my first chapter and synopsis. My first chapter is done, dare I say *whispers* perfect *whispers*

The thing driving me to tears and alcohol is that synopsis, I would be very grateful for as many tips as possible on how to write one. I find that google is littered with conflicting information,

Also, can a full synopsis be expected when the book only has a single chapter?

THANK YOU XXX

Michelle, who has asked for this? The usual thing is for an agent or publisher to ask for the first 1-3 chapters and a synopsis, and if they like it, the whole thing asap.

You can't write a synopsis without knowing how the book develops, unless you have a very strict plan of the entire thing and you mean to stick to it like glue. What looks great at the planning stage can be found not to work when you actually get there.

A synopsis has to tell the entire story, including the ending, on one A4 page (unless you're told otherwise). Leave out the minor characters: include the novel's genre, length, information about who's who and what they learn along the way.

Basically, you need to tell the agent all they need to know in order to decide if this book works as a novel, and if it suits their portfolio, and if it's well-written and saleable. (No pressure, then!)

Put 'synopsis' in the search term box on the red banner and you'll find useful information about what's needed.
