Taking a step into the realm of fantasy

Good morning all;

I have been thinking all weekend about developing two books within the huge realm of fantasy i.e. Elves, Dwarves, magic and possibly dragons etc. I understand how big an undertaking this would be but as a long term Lord of The Rings and Warhammer fan I would love to try my own. My question is rather advice seeking I think.

How do I even begin to start this endeavour?

Thank you all in advance and Merry Christmas :)

Play around with the old fantasy tropes. Typical and boring imitations of Tolkien is to make good guys recognisable by their clothes or skin colours. Or every creature within the elf race is same just as every dwarf is the same as the other dwarf. It gets boring. Use their racial differences perhaps to make a story that's diverse and has all the tensions that come with it.

You have to be careful with magic too. It can so easily overwhelm a plot if you use too much of it.
