University/College

What do you think is the best thing to study at Uni or college? I have started to study poetry, I think that it has changed my aspect on things i.e. the way you can use certain techniques to complex and describe the situation a character is in...Is there anything else that would help with the same thing?

I agree with Pauline on this one. Do what you love and be happy. It doesn't matter if you don't make fortunes at it. Material things are transient; you can't take them with you :)

I'm doing history at Uni, and that's helped me with a lot of stuff like how peoples develop and what kind of governments spring up. It's been really useful for creating a believable world for my characters to live in.

If poetry makes you tick, then you're doing the right degree. Everyone is going to have some sort of regrets coming out of Uni, there's no perfect choice. But if poetry inspires your writing I think you've made the best decision possible for you. I can totally understand if you don't want to look into any history, but I'd recommend it to get an idea of how people act on a larger scale.

Also, just join any societies you're interested in - they don't have to be writing-related. They'll all be experiences you can work from and new experiences give you a broader range for the types of characters you can be confident about using.

Something which will get you a job.

I know I sound sarcastic but I'm being totally straight. There is no point is spending 5 figures to get some letters after your name so you can get a Mcjob at the end of it you didn't need a degree for.
