Using an arts package

Hi all. I have an art question for a change.

I'm helping to design a logo for a business. I have a few ideas and I've drawn them out on paper. I want to scan the images onto a PC, add a colour and text. Do I need to download an arts package for this?

And if I do, does anyone know which one would do what I need? (Preferably a free download!).

It's nothing complex. It's an outline of an image. I'll have the image all one caller but maybe fading into the background. In the front of the image, there'll be the business name.

I have spent a few hours google-searching but I haven't found one that covers what I need to do.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've had a few different ones to look at.

Susanne, I've decided to go with Inkscape and see how things turn out.

Hi Andrew,

As a logo has to be made in vector, you can use Inkscape. It's open source and free, and runs on Linux, Windows and Mac.

Link: https://inkscape.org/en/

It's just as good as illustrator and InDesign, with lesser tools, which also is a little over the top, when you are just starting out :))

Best regards

Hi Andrew,

I have done something similar using Photoshop. Though not a free package my partner was used to the program and with his knowledge of printing and layout he tidied my drawn image up, coloured it and added wording. You might consider Illustrator or InDesign, but again, are not free.

At the time we had no budget for the professional services of a skilled graphic designer and the logo has served our little hobby business for eight years. However, it still seems a little home-made to me.

You get what you pay for, especially with the very technical knowledge of the ways to produce and polish a logo and the differences for say, letterheads, websites, signage or what looks good on a phone app. If your friend has anything in his budget it might be worth working with a graphic designer using your image ideas.
