I have recently finished reading Plunder in Paradise - Geraldine McCaughrean, and now started reading Stamboul Train - Graham Greene.
What influenced you choices?

@ Barbara Thompson ("I am also reading 'Asda's favourites', 100 recipes, because it was free and makes an excellent table mat. I will read all sorts of rubbish, but I'll never read a James Patterson novel again.")
Ah, but would you use a James Patterson novel as a table mat?
Wilhelmina,
My two younger sons liked Mortal Engines by Phillip Reeve. They also mentioned a Series of Unfortunate Events and George's Marvellous Medicine. My eldest son said The Hobbit or anything by Roald Dahl. My daughter, again a RD fan and mentioned The Magic Finger, but declared her favourite as Malory Towers by Enid Blyton (but that might be because I read the series to her when her brothers were at scouts).
A bit of a mix, but overall I have to conclude that you are probably right on this.
Wilhelmina,
I have to agree that 'good' people are often manipulated by the 'bad' and that there are many shades to both for us all to try to understand. However, for little kids, the basics of kindness to others and protecting friends and family is a wise place to build from, don't you think? More complicated themes can come later.
I have a mind to ask my kids (grown up now) what their favourite children's book was. BRB
