There are many elements that weave a fantasy tale, like magical items, mythical creatures, prophecies, new races etc. List the elements, you as reder would like.(other than story)
Prophecies, they are amazing. Depicting character's life and leading him or her to destiny. Or maybe the irony in some. Than of course mythical creatures. They are the ones that make a story a fairytale.
A link back to real life myths, traditional or even cliche objects/skills/spells reused in a new fashion and an unashamed passion for telling a great story, unfashionable portals, dragons, knights, witches, wizards, broomsticks, wands and all.
I prefer the "new races" or aliens, a like the cultural aspects of why they do the things they do in the story. Magical items is my second favourite.
