CS Forester's 'The Gun', which is my period. It's omniscient narrator, which I'm not a big fan of usually. Plus the one enduring main 'character', through scenes which switch complete sets, is a piece of ordnance rather than a person.
The story was written in the 1930s so style is rather of it's time, though it's no worse for that.
The novel before that was set at the time of the Zulu Wars - a romance, basically, with a female lead who needed...well, never mind. Gave me the same sort of reaction as Bernard Cornwell's young Uhtred and for similar reasons.
I tend to read historical action adventure though usually avoid 1800-1815.
I'm currently reading the Baby Shoes Anthology, which, as the title suggests is not a novel at all, but an anthology of works. I've only read a couple so far but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'd recommend it to anyone - with over 190 stories it's sure to have something for everyone's tastes - and it supports a good cause.
Prior to that, the last novel I read was Lorraine Swoboda's - Mrs Calcott's Army, which is also on Amazon. I really enjoyed that too. Another recommended read!
