What is the target audience of your novel?

The are many categories to choose from in the Writer' and Artists' Yearbook and the 2013 Guide To Literary agents.

I believe that action, adventure, historical, juvenile, literary, middle-grade, romance and young adult apply to my novel.

That's the trouble with genre fiction - deciding the right niche.

I know someone who writes action-adventure-historical-literary (a la Hilary Mantel without the attitude problem) whereas I'm more action-adventure-historical-military. You could fairly rack them together in a bookstore, but readers of the first might not necessarily enjoy the second, and vice-versa. Plus both contain elements of romance, and both would be suitable for a YA audience since the sex and violence are not graphic.

Difficult, isn't it?
