What is the test of a good contemporary or traditional novel?

Will the best contemporary literature be regarded as traditional in years to come?

Thanks Sarah, I'll look out for that one.

I'm really pleased to hear so many authors writing strong female characters, let's hope it starts filtering through to the publishers and buyers now!

Jonathan, I think it's fine for women to be rescued but what I'd love is the feisty lady to be the hero and to be the rescuer herself.

Well, I'm not sure if I'll ever know! It takes a long time for something to be considered a masterpiece - take Jude the Obscure by Hardy, that was really badly received when it was released but now considered a fantastic book. Not that I'm saying all books received badly now will become masterpieces to come, most certainly not Fifty Shades of Grey. I guess one has to wait ;)

My MC is rescued a fair few times don't get me wrong! Mostly from herself! But i want her to stand up for herself and not take any crap from boys in my book who think they know better!

I'm just sick of reading about those weak girls that can't do anything but stand and wait to be rescued :)
