What is the test of a good contemporary or traditional novel?

Will the best contemporary literature be regarded as traditional in years to come?

Why do women have to be 'kick-ass' nowadays? Even the love interest (sorry, tacky phrase) characters in my stories seem to be that way inclined, which is very non-Georgian/Regency. Though what Katie said about the Victorians is true and began earlier, with women running homes, businesses and estates while their menfolk were at war, so I suppose I'm not actually a million miles away.

So is it still allowed for feisty ladies to be rescued by the hero, or this that now non-PC?

Libba Bray does a good job writing a strong female lead too, I am quite a fan of A Great and Terrible Beauty, its different from all the whiny girls out there

Why does it appear that the fashion in writing today only seems to consist of gross picture books, sexy young adult books and controversial adult books, and celebrity books? Why publish celebrity books? Do they not earn enough money? What interesting story do they have to tell apart from their experiences with plastic surgery? Controversy just causes arguments and is a pitiful way of getting attention using the shock factor. Sexy young adult books are distasteful copycats and gross picture books are literally crap.
