It seems to me that much of the advice given is very sage and appropriate. There is no magic formula of what topics interest people. Have a great plot/s with interesting and realistic characters, good dialogue and a well written story line and you will grab attention. Make sure that your first few lines grab the attention of the reader and draw them in. If you can write a story that you believe in then there is every chance the reader will also believe it. Have confidence and faith in your own ability but be prepared to accept criticism of your work.
Persevere with it and hope for the little bit of good luck you will need.
Best wishes
Mark
Things that snap my interest are often things that are new and novel (pun excused). There is nothing worse that opening a book to find it going down the "Popular" route. Things that are original to others are maybe things that are familiar to your, the author. As for what sells-well, that's anyones guess; but the current fad seems to be of the' Girl on a Train'/ When I go to Sleep/Gone Girl doesn't it.
First of all, if you decide to write about anything which is 'popular', there is no need of writing.
Secondly, write only when you feel to write, only what your heart wants to express. Sincerity is the trait which attracts readers.
I'm not a writer, I just read each and everything. I find it interesting only when the writer is devoted to his work regardless to the topic.
