What is a Vignette.

Hi there this is one for all my fellow writers can you please explain to me what is a Vignette, and how, when, and where would you use it. I am under the belief that it is a form of Flash fiction, am I right or am I way off.

For some reason It was mentioned in an article I was reading and I meant to look it up on google, but I far prefer the views of my fellow writing friends.

So can you help me with this one.

According to my Thesaurus (Word Web)

It can be:

1. A brief literary description

2. A photograph whose edges shade off gradually

3. A small illustrative sketch (as sometimes placed at the beginning of chapters in books)

Take your pick - And if you don't already have it, I recommend using Word Web

(It's free to download)

Apologies Gordon, your question is or was, presumably more serious a matter for you than I took it to be. Forgive my part in confusing you. As for being a trouble, rest assured we who reply (well, myself at least) to these questions relish opportunities to air my erudition - or what I try to pass off as my knowledge, learning and expertise, which in fact is paltry. So thanks for that question which obliged me to look it up as I learned more from that dictionary entry than I expected to. Now, I'm going to check out that Wiki link, Ritesh has provided, above, & soon, must buy the latest edition of Chambers or an equally prestigious dictionary. Can't rely on Wiki Wisdom for everything, can we? Happy Vignetting.
