Ernest Hemingaway said All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn.
That may as well be, but my favourite American Novel is Little Women - Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888).
Closely followed by The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald.
My Favourite Contemporay American author is Sharon Creech.

I just searched M.E. Kerr to check that she's still alive.
She is: and 89yo. I also got reminded that - under other pen-names - she doesn't write exclusively for children. She was also a groundbreaker in nonfiction and fiction about lesbians... also wrote (writes?) crime novels.
Her real name is Maryjane Meaker and I recommend her autobiography, "ME ME ME ME ME" (published under the name M. E. Kerr) to any would-be authors.

Favourite American novelist writing almost exclusively for younger readers: as a writer, Sharon Creech is definitely a contender. Also M. E. Kerr. As a person, I prefer the latter. And her book Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack takes the prize for best title of book for pre-teens and teens. I read it probably 35 years ago and can't forget it.
