I like authors who really make an effort to finish a story. Roald Dahl was particularly good at this. Often his children's books explain the life of the character far into the future after the story has ended giving the reader a real sense of closure. Books that leave me wondering how the character fared later in life infuriate me.
I don't think I have favourites, though. Authors who've found their niche in creating the same type of book over and over again don't interest me and different authors bring different things to different subjects so I don't assume that because I've enjoyed one of their novels that I will enjoy another. I think absorbing from a range of people is more important than following any particular person's work.
Oops, Eva Ibbotson.
