Why would you read?

We all love reading a particular genre, but I'm sure we've all had instances where we've read book's out of that particular genre. I want to know why exactly one would choose to do this. Please state a work such as this, one you've loved reading even though it is out of your genre. Also preferably mention why you read it, what attracted you to the work, what exactly you loved in it. I believe a true masterpiece would make readers read it, no matter the genre, so I want to compare all the work's you will list and find common things or common elements that all of these have. All contributions are appreciated.

I choose to read books outside my preferred genre by traditional and contemporary award-winning authors. Learn from the best is my motto. I have never been disappointed by the quality of the novels by acclaimed writers. I have learned much from the structure and style of high quality books.

I am about to read 'Good Wives' the sequel to 'Little Women' by Louisa May Alcott. I read it because it was highly recommended. I'm glad I did. I believe 'Little Women' is the best piece of American literature. It's a "coming of age" drama tracing the lives of four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, during the American Civil War. The book has excellent characterisation and great charm.
