I wouldn't choose to read specifically gay/lesbian fiction by choice, but then I wouldn't read sci-fi or fantasy either.
As for non-heterosexual characters in a novel, that's pretty normal, isn't it?
I have only read two books with gay characters first being the Harry Potter book and the second is 13 Bullets, but it doesn't matter to me if someone is gay or not as long as they give good reason for me to like or dislike them.
