I always write with the music on, I find I write alot better and faster..
Depends what mood I'm in, personally, or what I'm writing. Silence is good because silence creates the needed empty space for your imagination to do the writing. If I'm struggling with a piece of description, I would listen to a piece of classical music which reflects the theme I'm writing. You can feel the music take you to the place you want the writing to take the reader. Other times I'd listen to quiet music of my personal favourite artists and bands, just to get me thinking.
Dialogue is a no go with music - my head gets all muddled with different words and I can't focus on the flow of the conversation. Other than that, any condition is okay for me to write in.
You should try listening to different genres of music and see which works best for you - if they work at all. I suppose it's a bit like revision and reading; if you can't read without any distractions I don't think you could write with music in the background.
I need total silence - unless I'm writing in the garden when the sounds of nature soothe the creative mind
