Are there any competitions that I could enter in regards to poetry or a short story? Preferably a free-to-enter-one but I don't care if I have to pay an entry fee.
Please leave a comment, thanks!

I'm glad you asked this question.
I'm subscribed to writing magazine and I do enter their competitions every now and again, unfortunately I've not won any yet. The thing I do struggle with is the word count given, I've recently written a paranormal story which I want to enter into the competition. Unfortunately I have gone way to over in the word count and I am now trying to find another competition to enter. Any suggestions would be great.
If you're in the UK, there's a supplement to Writing Magazine this month which lists competitions of all kinds. Always check the comp website for rules and regs, and stick to them. Obvious. but you'd be amazed at how many people don't, and all their hard work is just thrown away.
One word of caution: look out for ones advertised in reputable places like W&A and WM. Not everything you see online is real.

You're certainly in the right place. If you look under CommunityCompetitions you will see the open competitions run by W&AYB. They have a short story one open now.
Also, if you check @writers_artists on twitter you will find that they recently posted a list of upcomming competitions. Twitter is generally a great place to find all sorts of writing competitions.
