Sure, I think it's harder than one could imagine
I have been influenced by so many authors, that I find myself trying to imitate, to copy, to write like !
And it, naturally, won't work, and will lead you to disppointment !
Maybe you have to pass through this before you forge your own style, freed from this tendancy of mimesis !
I would like to know your opinion about it !
Thank you Renee
I think you're right, I'm asking myself too much questions instead of just writing )
Neeraj
I guess you're talking about the sentence "and trying to write in their style"
I meant "escaping from trying to write in their style"
Sorry, my fault ! )
But to complete my question, I can say I had my magic realism phasis (influenced by G.G. Marquez), my autofiction phasis (Henry Miller) my Kafkaian phasis (yeah, you're smart !) my style maniac phasis (Nabokov) my cut-up and mixed drugs phasis (Burroughs) my monolog phasis (Beckett) my second autofiction phasis (Roth) my "Humanity is a crap" phasis (Celine) my cynicism & sarcastic phasis (Amis) my Central Europe phasis (Vollmann, a big one) my ergodic literature phasis (bigger one, Danielewski) and lately my maximalism phasis (David Foster Wallace)
The good news is : I think I'm on the way to stabilize my chromatophores ! )
PS : I never used drugs in my Burroughs pahsis...
Mehdi ... it's something that will come with practise. The more you're conscious of it (thinking about other styles) the less of 'you' will be in your text. I would suggest to just let it flow out your way and stop thnking about the others.
