A fun question.
Who would make your favourite top ten list of contemporary authors.
I found it difficult to select ten favourite authors. You can pick less than ten in any order of preference
My list is as follows.
1st. Michael Morpurgo
Joint second place.
Joanne Harris
Eva Ibottson
Sharon Creech
Malorie Blackman
Geraldine McCaughrean
Joint third place.
Philip Pullman
Anne Fine
Gillian Cross
Kevin Crossley Holland
I agree, Jon.
Flowery prose does not work for all genres.
I learned much from the strengths of the authors on my list, especially, Morpurgo.
(i) William Horwood
(ii) Dick Francis
(iii) Bernard Cornwell
Afraid (apart from the first) I'm a Philistine. I prefer storytelling to flowery prose so Morpurgo does it for me, too.
My problem of late has been the amount of historical NF I have to read for research, being a total non-historian since schooldays. Fiction takes a back seat.
An interesting selection, Jennifer. I will look out for Murakami and Faulkner. Murakami has some interesting connections to classical music.
