How to Edit Your Poetry

4th September 2024 12:30pm to 1:30pm, Online

Learning how to edit yourself is one of the most important things a poet can do. This lunchtime workshop will give you the tools you need to improve your resilience, ask yourself honest questions about your poetry and get to what you need to say as a poet.

Author of The Poetry Writers’ Handbook, Sophia Blackwell, will be taking you through the process of editing three pre-selected sample poems as part of the workshop, identifying potential issues, and suggesting improvements.

For your poem to be considered as part of the workshop, please email it to info@sestinapress.com – we cannot guarantee to cover all poems in the workshop but will aim to respond either during or after the lunchtime workshop.

This masterclass will be online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.

Speaker profiles
Sophia Blackwell

I’m a performance poet with three published collections of poetry and the author of a novel. My poetry has been anthologised by Bloodaxe, Nine Arches and the Emma Press among others, and for the past year, I’ve hosted the LGBT+ radio show Out in South London on Resonance FM, showcasing gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans authors, musicians, comedians and other creatives like me.

Recent notable gigs include four times at Glastonbury on the Poetry & Words Stage, Women of the World (WOW) Festival at the South Bank Centre and headlining a national tour with Hammer and Tongue. I’m a Literary Death Match champion, Spread the Word LGBT Hero and Diversity Role Model. I’m also a freelance editor, Chair of Poetry London and the Pride Network at Hachette UK.

I’ve taught workshops for the National Portrait Gallery and various schools and colleges around the UK, and I lecture on creative writing and careers at Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education. My first love is still spoken word, but I also love radio and presenting and organising real-time and virtual events.
