Writing Vividly

31st January 2024 7:00pm to 8:30pm, Online

Some books fill your head with images you'll never forget. So how can you make sure your readers can see every bit of the story you're telling them?

Writer and visual artist Isobel Wohl will share techniques and tips for writing more vividly, looking at how you can pull from life to build the world and characters of your book. She'll talk about the importance of writing vividly, and how it can be used to capture a reader and keep them with you. And she'll look at how vivid writing can be approached in different ways, when writing short form fiction and long form fiction.

Plus she'll share insight into her own writing process, and her journey to publication.

Start your 2024 with the tools to bring your story to life on the page.

This masterclass will be online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.

This event is being run in collaboration with Book Aid International, with proceeds from ticket sales will go towards their Generation Reader campaign.

Isobel Wohl

Isobel Wohl is a Brooklyn-based writer. A native New Yorker, she lived in London for seven years before returning to her home city.

Her first novel, Cold New Climate, was published by Weatherglass Books in April 2021 to excellent reviews. Lamorna Ash, writing in the TLS, described the book as “exceptionally good” and Wohl’s writing as “beautifully delicate.” In the Guardian, Lara Feigel wrote, “We’re left asking with pleasure: what will Isobel Wohl do next?”

Wohl is also the author of a short story collection, Winter Strangers (MA BIBLIOTHÈQUE, 2019). Her essays have appeared in Emerge, The Irish Times, and LitHub. She is also a visual artist. She is currently working on her second novel.

Book Aid International: Generation Reader

By 2030, over a third of the world’s young people will be in Africa. Millions of them will have no books at all. That’s an estimated 733 million children and young people who could become future doctors, teachers, business leaders, writers and more.

But, for millions of children and young people in Africa there is a real risk they will not realise their potential and be able to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty, because they lack access to books and quality education. Together, we can get them the books they need.

Through Generation Reader we will work with our partners to scale up our vital work, creating access to books in even more schools, more public and community libraries and more universities across sub-Saharan Africa. We must act now to have an impact on the next generation of young people in Africa.

Proceeds from your tickets sales will go towards Book Aid International’s Generation Reader campaign. You can find out more, and donate further, here.
