Lunchtime Learning: Modernising a Fairytale
Fairytales are often the first stories we are told as children. They shape our what we understand stories to be, as well as the world around us. And now it's time to rewrite them.
In this lunchtime learning session with award-winning novelist and short story writer Kirsty Logan, you will have the chance to get to the heart of a fairytale, its core conflicts and themes, and then bring it into the 21st century. Kirsty will encourage you to play with every element of these stories we know so well, from the gender, sexuality and social class of core characters, to the time period and setting of the narratives. Who 'saves' whom? Which of the characters is telling the story? How does the story end? Through close reading, group discussion and writing exercises Kirsty will help you take the familiar and write a story that is new, modern and unexpected.
This masterclass will be online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.
