Writing memoir: where to start and where to end

Writing memoir: where to start and where to end

Do you want to tell your story? Putting real life onto a page is a process of transformation. Memoirs can pull from the span of a lifetime, so how do we decide what to share with an audience of readers? How do we take this undifferentiated mass of information and detail and character and life, and turn it into a coherent narrative? Events in our lives don't always have a beginning, middle and end – so we, as writers, have to define them.

Memoirist and fiction writer Kirsty Logan (The Unfamiliar: A Queer Motherhood Memoir) will be guiding you through these questions and more. Through writing examples, group discussion and individual writing exercises, she'll help you explore the different ways to structure a memoir, how to figure out what you really want to say, what to include and what to leave out, what the reader does and doesn't need to be told, where to start your story, and where to end it.

This masterclass will take place online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.
