Writing Romantasy
Want to write romantasy, the explosive new genre publishers are searching for?
Tara Loder, an Editorial Director with experience of big five publishing, rapidly growing digital-first imprints and publishing startups, will discuss what makes a romantasy, taking you through the key elements and showing you how to incorporate them into your own writing. What is romantasy? Is it new? What are its defining features? Learn the answers to all these questions and more.
Tara will lead you through how to become a world builder, how to populate your world and how to create magic systems. She'll help you master the tropes and explore how to write an incredible, original world – incorporating the known and unknown. You'll determine who is at the heart of your story and how they fit into your romantastic world. You'll look at some stock archetypes of the hero and heroine, and learn how to make them your own.
A romantasy is rarely just a one-and-done when it comes to plot. You’re going to need an overarching plot that ties together a number of books, while making each book a satisfying read. You’ll learn the Squiggly Line Test, which can be applied before, during and/or after writing. Finally, you'll discover how to make the romance and the mission the heart of the story; because these are the threads that will keep the reader coming back for more.
This masterclass will take place online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place. The session will end with a Q&A, so come ready with your questions!
