Writing the Supernatural

Writing the Supernatural

From the paranormal to the ghostly, the alien to the fantastical, the vampiric to the demonic, supernatural fiction is a broad genre that is full of the unexpected and the unexplainable. Whether you are inspired by classics like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or contemporary titles such as Peaces by Helen Oyeyemi and The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings, this masterclass is for you.  Author Caroline Green will be discussing world-building, how to take decisions that lead to the supernatural being accepted in a story, as well as how to avoid cliches. With this supernatural setting established, she will then offer her top tips for creating characters and narrative that have your audience on the edge of their seat. Through sharing her own experience of writing her haunted house story The Whisper House, extracts from ghost stories and practical writing exercises, Caroline will help you take your supernatural story to the next level. Perhaps something stranger than you thought possible was lurking just out of reach... As a writer of both adult fiction and young adult fiction, Caroline will also cover how the supernatural can be explored for both audiences, and will answer your questions about the editorial and publishing processes for both.   15 minutes will be reserved for a Q&A at the end of the masterclass. This masterclass will be online, video platform to be confirmed. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks.
