An answer from a literary agent

Most agents do not tell you how long you need to wait to hear from them. What long it should take?

Hi Dorota,

I recently asked my writing tutor about simultaneous submissions. She said that it's not a good idea for short stories, but you can submit to several agents at once, as the waiting time is lengthy. Usually they take several months, but if another agent accepts before, you just need to notify the first.

Hope this helps,

It does vary depending on the size of the agency/time of year – October, if I recall correctly is a particularly bad time to query agents.

For most queries, I would expect a wait of at least 6 weeks.

The longest time I have ever seen on any submission guidelines was 4-6 months. The shortest 2 weeks.

Good luck with your submission

A good agent/agency will reply in four to six weeks.
