I agree with Victoria regards editing first.
I' m lucky in that I have two readers, my better half (who's hyper-critical) and a friend who's into the historical period I'm writing at the mo. I know if I offered either a manuscript with too many errors they'd be reluctant to look at any future work. Especially the wife ;)
You just need to find people who like reading your genre and are going to give a strong opinion. There are 500 people in my workplace so it's not too difficult to find a few opinionated readers there.There was also someone in my village who liked to read and had time on her hands.
Just make sure you've ironed as many mistakes out as you can. My first readers went through hell!

I'm working on my second draft of Jaguar at the moment and would be interested to find out the steps you took to obtain beta readers.
I have a critique partner but would like to widen the audience to get points of view from readers rather than a fellow writer.
