I'm going to be working on a novel about strippers, after watching the channel 4 documentary. My issue is how do you write a novel on such a cliche topic without sounding cliche. When ironically all the real reasons given for stripping were very cliche?
Katie - quite right I don't think I explained myself very well. I only mean to refer to denial - it would be quite easy to persuade yourself that the position you are in is your choice, making it more palatable. Holds off depression, temporarily!
Try contacting a few via the adult webcam sites on the internet, there might even be facebook groups who knows!
Dan I think there is a big difference between strippers and drug addicts, it is after all a paying job. I wouldn't say I was addicted to my job but however poorly it pays I enjoy the money and I'm definitely not a stripper!
From someone who knows absolutely nothing about strippers - no, honestly - I wonder if strippers would be completely honest with you, or even themselves. Much like an addict can "quit any time they like", I would imagine a stripper "enjoys the money and is in complete control". No-one likes to admit they are in a vulnerable position. Always worth a shot though. Wonder if there are any support groups/ charities that might have some useful insight? NOT that I am suggesting strippers are in need of that - but you never know.
