Are they worth entering? Especially the ones you have to pay for?

I agree with Adrian. It's worth for the experience. But personally, I go only for the ones where you don't need to pay (maybe coz i'm still a kid, kinda) OR if I'm lucky to be sponsered by my aunt, the cheaper ones...
I agree with Jonathan. There are reasons as to why organisers need writers to pay a certain fee to participate. But then again, as keen as writers are to participate, it is always wise to tread with caution.

They are worth entering for the experience, but I would be reluctant to pay to enter. It would also depend on the rules of the competition.
