Are they worth entering? Especially the ones you have to pay for?

I am sure if you really wanted to enter competitions there are free ones out there, I found out today even my union held a short story and poem competition before Christmas, the prize was either £1000 or a kobo ereader so not to be scoffed at
I'm sure that a number of organisers of 'paid for' writing competitions have the purest of motives. After all, you have to pay to enter most sporting competitions, as organisers have costs they must cover.
But I'm equally sure some online sites see writers as cash cows, so desperate for any recognition they will pay through the nose for the faint possibility of a small prize.
So my answer is some may be, but hey, let's be careful out there.
