Do you intend to kill your characters off?

I intend to leave some of my characters in the ether.

Why kill off good characters that my be useful in a series of novels?

Replies

I have four main characters in my novel. I can't see how I could kill any of them. it would be like killing a family member.

There's always that sour moment when a main character dies... the Sirius Black effect!

And I don't particularly like doing it. But sometimes it's necessary to drive the plot forwards.

Also, sometimes I get the feeling that the books are too 'flowery' - my own word - if nothing damaging happens to the MC.

In my later books, I kill off a few people that my MC grows to care about. But in early ones I keep it light.

I'm still far behind when it comes to terms of actually writing my story...

but over the years I've went through the events (planning) what would happen next.

Sometimes you realize that killing off your characters might be the best option, it depends where your going with your story.

For example my story had about 6 characters, later on I started to notice that they were pretty much "paper cut outs of one another," all trying to go for the leading role. So I brought them out back and killed them off so too speak.

I still had the issue of characters going for the main role I had thrown away 3 but still 2 were becoming an issue in my story and perventing me to get on with it. After leaving myself with only one main character. I realized that the actual story started at "Vincents death. (character of mine)

Sometimes we get too attached to our characters . Its like they become living and breathing people. We might think they be useful but maybe its just our "emotions" towards these characters that stop us from giving them the boot.

(I hope this helped.....) :)
