Fantasy Genre

Fantasy is not my genre so I would like to ask whether it's acceptable to write about something which, in our world as we know it, would be impossible without any explanation at all?

For example: if your main protagonist is a half human/half dog is it OK to describe the creature as having the body of a human but the head of a dog but then have the creature perfectly able to speak like a human because his dog head happens to have human vocal chords? Sorry - that was a bit rambling.

I'm fairly sure the answer will be that it's fine to do that but just needed to be sure. Many thanks in advance.

As it's fantasy, the reader will be ready to accept strange beings without question.

Hello Hache,

A very good question. I have a fantasy story on the go myself and I have also sometimes wondered how we can portray our characters to a potential reader. I would image you can describe and explain them in any detail you see fit. This, after all is your story and kind of your personal version of how you see the world and the races/species within it.

It is also worth spending time considering how your character will move, communicate and wear certain items of clothing (if any) as the body will be shaped somewhat different to that of a human, ears, different angles of joints, elongated arms and a tail maybe.

Go for it and good luck.

Your short story is already a story, a narration of literature. That is, you have already written a short story about half a man and half a dog. He's ready. But you can make it long and interesting. Of course, this requires an incentive, as well as for any work.
