I agree with you whole-heartedly Adrian. But if they are famous authors, it would be good for them to follow their readers just to get some insight into how their readers who are also writers themselves perceive their writings. Just a thought anyway.
Authors are people too! They are interested in what others have to say and share. I wouldn't read too much into it.
