Getting back into the swing of things...

Hi all,

It has been a very long time since I have written or even edited my novel and I must say that now that I have some actual free time while I am off work I am struggling to get started back up again. It feels rather daunting to go over my 50,000+ words and edit.

Does anyone have any good tips for 'getting back into the swing of things'?

Replies

Thanks all. I think I may have placed a little too much emphasis and importance of being off work for the next two weeks, expecting to just open the file and pick it up from where I left off.

- I have had a busy few months, moving house, city and job so my writing has been put on hold, and prior to the actual house move it was all about 'finding a new job, in a new city'

Thanks!

Hi ASG.

Tackle one editing process at a time.

Whether it be dialogue, streams-of-thought, settings, characters, descriptions, dramatic events, sign-posting, topic sentences, chapter titles, chapter hooks, clunky sentences, grammar, or any weakness in the plot and storyline.

Bypass, but make a note of errors you are not editing, as it will stop you getting side tracked. You can go back and edit them later.

I hope that helps.

Good luck.

After a long absence from your work has open your eyes - you will be reading it like a first time reader, discovering the characters and the plot. I find it easier after a few months reprieve to go back and look over my work and mentally correct it (if I'm reading it online, like my fanfiction) before going to the file and editing it there.

I've looked over some fanfiction work from two years ago that is cringe worthy and I've deleted it from my FF.net profile to forget it and start afresh but before I did that I noticed my improvement from my first story to my latest story - I noticed straight away my spelling, grammatical errors and sentence structures had improved considerably!
