How does a story form in your mind?

For me, an Idea for my protagonists and few things about their world sort of comes to me, and while creating the story (with many ideas in my head), I kind of imagine my characters moving, talking etc.Well that's just me, but what about others?

I have a tendency of writing as if I am watching a movie. If I can imagine the place, the room, what the characters look like, how they interact with each other and how they move, the "movie" plot tends to fall into line around them.

The edits sort out the kinks.

They kind of happen, and then tell themselves as the characters and plot unrolls onto the paper.

Sometimes in dreams. Some spin offs from other tales.

The majority begin as short stories, when i right an opening paragraph as an exercise, something that grabs the reader.

My stories and scenes keep appearing in my mind. I have no choice in the matter. They nag me to write.
