I bought my copy of Writer’ & Artists Yearbook 2013, but I found on the internet “independent” publishers not listed in W’s & A. They are, however, the only ones inviting MSS submissions without a literary agent. Can they to be trusted?

You're right, Christina. Someone said 'the only way to fail is give up.'
I know what you mean about getting rejection letters but I was given some sound advice with regards to them. Which went along the lines of 'if you are getting rejection letters then you know that you are attempting to get your work published.'
Sure it hurts to get them but it's better getting them than having the manuscript in the box doing nothing.
The thing about scraping barrels is once you get the surface grime off you sometimes find decent wood underneath. Trouble is you can't tell just by looking ;)
