I've spent a lot of time just writing, on my own, and only joined this site this week but I have seen a couple of people mention 'landmarking'. Could someone please tell me what this is? Apologies if I should know this

That was a great question Gilly, and a great answer Adrian. I am going to add that to my long list of things to do.
It's nice to see on here how different writers write. I was starting to think I had a major flaw in my approach but it seems that we all write in our own way to achieve the same outcome - a book we are happy with. I'm off to try the cafe this morning and intend trying out a landmark for my book. I'm quite excited ;-)
I found that I had to have an end goal. I didn't and still don't plan as such, only using a form of landmarking to edit. But once I have all the characters and have some idea what might happen to them I try to picture an end scene and just work my way towards it. Usually the scene has changed by the time I get there. In five books I don't think even one is the original ending I planned, but I still need it there as something to aim for. There is also the small matter of me writing straight through four of my endings into yet another sequel. Oops.
Having said that, the end scene I have planned for the next book after I have finished the series is quite dear to me already. I hope I get to keep that one.
